Writing Schedule Update: May 2012

Okay, last week’s B&Z post was a day late and I cut it off at a good cutting off point, but… I was going to have more in it. This week’s post isn’t even started, I’m trying to get my brain to figure out what Bannon is doing. My brain is not listening to me. It just runs off on its own, tra-la-la, like a disobediant dog. Or… perhaps like a typical cat. ::sigh::

So. I have officially decided to go back to a 2-week publishing interlude. I would rather let the scenes cook up a bit more in my brain, get typed, and get proofed/edited more slowly, than to rush out shoddy product every week. Next B&Z post is due May 25. The Ambush all the Zevran fans are waiting for will occur… sometime in June. I think.

FAIL 5/11

Okay, it’s true! I didn’t finish this week’s scheduled part. BUT! I Have Excuses!

First off, I’d like to blame MY BRAIN, for obsessing over the Torchwood crossover. Bad Brain!

Secondly, I’d like to blame KLIDI/VENTI for running off with Bannon and his motorcycle. And also causing Zevran to go sulk. Do you know how disturbingly quiet it is in my brain without those two around??

Thirdly, I lay heavy blame on OHINYAN for writing some heavy Jack Harkness angst and torment. Yes, thank YOU for re-obsessing my brain with Torchwood. Thank you so much. (Insert sarcasm, there.)

Oh, and finally, I was sick this week.

So gimme a break, eh? It’s not my fault!

Working on Stuff

The post I’m supposed to publish tomorrow is HUGE. But… it’s mostly done. And mostly proofread. There’s just this one scene in it that I’ve been trying to do for a week and a half, but it won’t go. I’ve got it halfway done, I suppose. It’s not really clicking very well. ::sigh::

The post for next week is mostly done. Um, halfway done? I want to change the beginning around a bit. And I have to add some more info.

Meanwhile, my brain has been busy/distracted with doing more scenes and plotting for the B&Z/Torchwood crossover. And another Torchwood story that… actually has nothing to do with B&Z. Interesting.

In the art arena, I posted “Best Buds” (and “Best Buds II”) over at deviant Art. (They’re supposed to be viewed in sequence to get the proper impact.) I’m STILL not happy with Poser Bannon & Zevran. The other day, I threw my Michael 3′s into a scene, started with two Bishonen heads, and worked on them without using ANY references whatsoever.

When I was done, I thought I had some good looking elves. Not an exact Zevran replica, but, you know, a reasonable interpretation of him. And I thought Bannon looked even better. … Until I put the Bishonen versions into the Best Buds scene. And they managed to look HIDEOUS. More hideous!

::sigh:: So I don’t know. Bishonen Zevran’s face worked a lot better with the expression morphs than Zevran 7′s. I suppose I will have to go ahead and try other images I want to do, try each set in them. Battle of the elf faces.

Work This Week and Upcoming

This week will be another Zevran post, though relatively short. Next week looks to be a rather long haul, with the gang messing around in Redcliffe. I’m a little excited now, to be doing the Redcliffe battle. I thought it was going to be boring, but the ol’ brain has come up with some epic Lord-Of-The-Ringness scenes for it. It should be pretty cool. Of course, none of them are written yet… :X They’re cooking in the back brain.

And for all you annoying Zevran fans (you know who you are :X ), you will be ecstatic to know that Zevran will make a couple more cameo appearances before The Ambush. Okay, maybe not ecstatic, but happy, at least! I hope!

Despite a lot of stress and problems I’ve been having this month, and a rather severe bout of depression that has killed off my artistic creativity, writing has continued apace. Therefore, I’m still confident with the mid-May target for The Ambush.

This belongs here, because I can’t make a post template.

B&Z Upcoming Outline

Trying to organize things in my head, this is an outline of the next parts of the Bannon & Zevran saga that are coming up. (Or are up.)

Lothering (published)
In the Lion’s Den (published)
On the Road (written, typed in, not proofread/edited)

==Chapter 3: A Wolf in the Fold==
The Assassin (done)
Nightmares (not sure what is going on with this. i wanted this to evolve in the story, not become a summary chapter.)
Redcliffe 1 — arrival, Teagan, Murdoch
The Assassin on the Road (mostly done)
Redcliffe 2 — mini-missions, take a nap (partly written)
Redcliffe 3 — night attack
Redcliffe 4 — Teagan and the Castle
Redcliffe 5 — Connor
Redcliffe 6 — Aftermath
The Ambush

Now, if we’re lucky, some of those Redcliffe bits will be combined into one ‘part.’ And no, those aren’t the final titles. I’ll think of something. Hopefully. Yes, it says ‘take a nap.’ Yes, terribly important part of the tale. All the action-adventure of taking a nap!

Looking at the calendar, and projecting an every-other-week publishing schedule, plus combining RC2-6 into only 2 parts… that means The Ambush will occur on July 13th. An auspicious day for an ambush, to be sure, but cripes, that’s far away.

If I publish On the Road this week, and don’t skip a week when I get to parts that are already written, The Ambush can happen on June 8th or 15th or so. The big question is… can I get a write-ahead buffer built up during the weeks I already have something ready to go? If I can, I can continue a weekly publishing schedule indefinitely. And The Ambush can happen May 18th.

Let the betting pool commence! When will The Ambush happen?

::hears crickets::

Right, okay. But at least it’s sorted out in my head. The roadmap, anyway, if not the timetable.

Working

It’s been quiet on the non-publishing week here on the blog, but I am working on stuff! I have two upcoming for B&Z written out. This week we’ll see “The Lion’s Den,” featuring a little peek at what Loghain is up to. After that, some relaxing downtime with “On the Road,” which will help set up Bannon’s relationships with his companions.

And yes, you whiners! THEN we can get to the next chapter, “A Wolf in the Fold,” and Zevran will finally appear!

The bad news is… I’m kinda drawing a blank on Redcliffe. I have some interesting ideas to try out, but I’m not sure how to tie them all in. I might take a short break to let things get sorted out. While I do that, I can work on the dreaded Saw crosscrossover, and the Torchwood crossover. Although my brain needs to get its act together on filling the plot holes it’s creating….

I have finished (again, heh) Zevran’s head in Poser. I’ve managed to fix the ugly seam that was going up his nose and chin. And the ugly crease under his lips. I may have changed his nose a bit too much… :X The only question in my mind is, will Tryyn shoot me or give her stamp of approval? :X

With Zevran’s face, version 7, I’ve got another Poser image ready to render. Except I can’t get the Ambient Occlusion where I want it. Or, even the shadows and highlights. ::sigh::

I’ve also smoothed out the DAO rogue armor model and fit it to the M3 version of the boyz. I’m having a bit of trouble editing the joints of it in PP12. I’m not getting the results I want. Oh, but the Medieval Sets were all on sale at DAZ recently, so I have plenty of places to put them. When they’re not in vague indoor places, snogging, that is. :X

Poser Zevran Version 5a

okay, one more time! what’s wrong with his head now? no post-production, so yeah, his hair looks horrid.

Not Looking Good for This Week’s Post

I’m on page 14 of ‘Lothering Day,’ and not done yet. Almost! I got 2/3 of it typed in. I could probably finish the writing off and type it all in tomorrow, do a once-over for typos and get it out. But I’m not comfortable doing that.

I’m not happy with Sten. I thought I’d update him to a DA2 kossith/qunari. Or something. And I have a mod to update DA kossith/qunari to something more qunari-ish, but I haven’t taken a look at Sten in it yet. So frankly, I don’t know how to describe him. I also went and made up (partly based on some DA2 concept sketches) some qunari armor. It doesn’t make sense to me that he would fit in, say, ‘Dwarven plate.’ :X What will happen if I ever want to do a Toolset illustration with Sten in it? I’ll be doomed, that’s what.

In the art department, you can look forward to a slew of elf snogging images. (You may alternately ‘yay’ or gag.) I got a bunch of ‘Romance’ couples poses from Renderosity, and tried them out on the boyz. I kept a few that looked quite alluring.

I have one rendered, and with sub-surface scattering (you should try to look impressed), but the hair is screwy on it. So it is going to need a lot of post-production. Which I’m not sure will work so well… so who knows.

I have made Zevran’s hairdo. I modified the Pullback hair I had, I added some chunks of the hair I exported to GMax, plus two poseable braids. Texture needs a little work, but it looks tons better already.

Plus I’m supposed to make a toolset piccie for someone… someday. I haven’t fogotten about it! …Don’t hold your breath, though :X

Poser Zevran Slicer

I have the braids on Zevran’s hairdo now. I still need to work on morphs for the base hair, and get the front strands made somehow.

This is just me messing around with the outfit I bought for him, Slicer by Val. Yes, clearly an AC influence, there. After taking the hood off, I realized there’s no pauldrons. And those boots are the Wildenlander Boots (previously worn by Bannon).

He looks too humanish in this one. I still have to get ahold of Michael 3′s Full Body Morphs and activate them on these figures (I don’t know why they’re not on there). But they should let me make the boyz more slim and muscular.

Why Fan-Fiction?

My pal Whuffie wrote an article on writing fan fiction (see here). This week I have been pondering the whys and wherefores of writing fan-fiction, myself. I mean… why doesn’t one just write unique stuff? Why borrow/steal/use someone else’s creations and characters and such? I can explain.

First, you need to understand fandom. You can like, love, and/or live a work. For example… back in the day, I used to watch The X-Files every Friday night. I didn’t watch it religiously, I just watched it every week. I didn’t really love the show. If it had gotten cancelled, I wouldn’t have cared much at all.

Some episodes I really liked, like the circus on. I adore the messages in that one about “freaks” vs normal people. And Mr. Nutt reading and dressing-down on Mulder is a total riot. Oh, and I liked the deep pathos in the episode where they blow Mulder’s head off. So I taped a couple like those, but not every single one.

Contrast this with my all-time favorite TV show: Wizards and Warriors. I loved that show. I was totally ga-ga over that show. All week, I would count down the days, hours, and minutes until Saturday night at 8pm when it would be on again. Also note, that every single show I have ever loved anywhere near as much has been cancelled. I have a deep complex about this. Everything I love, the world hates and it gets cancelled. I’m traumatized.

Anyway, so there are shows you like and shows you love. And when you love a show (or a movie, or a book, it doesn’t matter what genre), sometimes something happens… and you start to live it. I can’t speak for normal people — in fact, I can’t even speak for other creative people — but personally, I’ve always had fictional versions of myself who lived in various stories and universes. I had a character in Star Wars, I had a character in Wizards and Warriors. I had a character in ReBoot, and I still can’t explain my attraction to that show.

This doesn’t always happen. For example, I love Mercedes Lackey’s Last Herald Mage trilogy, and I like all her Valdemar books and stories. But I have never crossed-over and wanted to be a Herald or a Bard, or even a Companion. I also love Lynn Flewelling’s Nightrunner series, but I don’t have any characters in that world, either.

Okay, so sometimes things click between you and a story or character or world, and you start fantasizing about it and making up your own stories or variations of the stories. And it’s no big deal, it entertains you, like when you were a kid and pretending to be Batman, or Robin, or Batgirl (or BatDog, if that was your thing).. But then sometimes, your mind is going along with these stories and something else happens….

You stumble across (or create, really) a very moving, very powerful story. And this story grips you so much, you want to preserve it for posterity — and, most likely, you want to share it with others.

And this is why fan-fiction happens. At least, for me.

And this is why even more bizarre things like cross-over fiction happen. You see two characters from similar, or heck, totally different worlds, and you imagine how they might interact. And as your brain plays this little mind game, this thought experiment, something develops out of it. Something that is at the core of mankind’s penchant for telling stories, a message you want people to receive.

Or… sometimes it’s just too funny to pass up. ;)

So… motivation for creating fan-fiction is not the uniqueness of the world, or of the characters, or the creation of something out of nothing. It’s a fundamental message that uses whatever media is at hand.

Could I take Bannon & Zevran’s story and translate it into something that is not Dragon Age? Make them something new, in my own world? I seriously do not think so. Oh, their personalities can translate to anywhere, any time; that’s not the issue. But the nuances of who they are and how they came to be that way; how they interrelate… that could only happen in Dragon Age: Origins, or a world/storyline so similar that it would immediately be noticed as a rip-off.

That’s why I write — anything, whether it’s fan-fiction or fiction based on role play — and even why I create art. There’s a message, or a vision, or an experience inside me and I want to let other people experience it as well.
